We just bought a new plasma hdtv 42" and the sound isn't very loud even at volume maxed?

We just bought a new tv and when we run it through our dvr/cable box the sound isn’t very loud, when we play video games though the sound is perfect. We are connecting the tv to the dvr via a basic cable connection. Should we go and buy hdmi connectors to connect the dvr to the tv?

go to the settings on your cable box, and set the volume control for your cable box to fixed, it sounds like your cable box volume is set to variable…
you will not get HD from your cable box with a normal coax cable, nor will you get HD with red/white/yellow cables…
for HD you will need either an HDMI cable (for 1080) or green/red/blue + red/white (for 720)

I’m not completely clear what you mean with this, but I’d have to guess that you mean a coaxial connection, in which case I’m surprised it works at all.
Yes, if your cable box supports HDMI, then by all means use it. It just makes the connections so much easier and neater that I use HDMI for that reason alone. I would caution you though to not spend a large amount of money on them though. Some retailers sell good cables that cost far more than is needed. http://www.monoprice.com makes very good but inexpensive HDMI cables.
Its definitely your cabling that’s the issue.
HDMI will deliver much better audio for you. So just go out and snag one of those. But be careful not to spend to much. There are many of consumer reviews out there that have shown that expensive HDMI cables do not perform better than cheap ones. So really all you need spend is $10-$15 at the most.
Places like Amazon.com, monoprice.com, bluejeanscable.com, etc. can offer really good deals on cheap HDMI cables. Or also check out computer stores in your area for good no-name brand HDMI cables.
