Depends on your needs:

Select LCD if you have a very well lit room. Since the screen is back lit, meaning that light is being pushed through the screen, you will see the picture better and have less problems with the glass on Plasmas. The best LCD tv out in the market is the Sony KDL-V40XBR1. It was the #1 selling LCD in the past 6 months. It has a great screen, with vibraint colors.

If you do most of your viewing at night or in a room with not tons of light then go with a Plasma. Plasmas have much better black levels, meaning that when your watching a night scene in a movie it will look black not grey like from an LCD. The best Plasma in the market is the Panasonic TH-42PX60U (or the TH-50PX60U if your looking for a 50"). Pansonic has the best Plasma screens in the market, the PX series has 3072 levels of grediation which produces over 28 billion colors.

If pricing is the main concern go with Plasma's they are cheaper.

Some people who are uneducated on Plasmas will tell you that they only last 4-5 years. Thats not true the models out today will last you 20-30 years depending on your viewing habbits.

The best place to find out more information about Plasmas and LCD are the following web sites:

Plasma is usually for Tvs bigger than 40" or 42" and LCD is nearly for all ranges. If looking something like 26", 32" or 40" I say go with LCD and Sony, Samsung, LG, Toshiba and Philips are among the best. For Plasma go with Panasonic, it is their speciality. So it depends on what size u r looking for, but I personaly go with LCD.

LCD is better, because Plasmas get hot and burn out after less than a decade. No reason to throw 8 grand down the drain.

The fast and simple answer is:

A plasma display panel (PDP) is an emissive flat panel display where light is created by phosphors excited by a plasma discharge between two flat panels of glass. The gas discharge contains no mercury (contrary to the backlights of an AMLCD). An inert mixture of noble gases (neon and xenon) is used instead.
What you have is a physical excitement of free radicals between the flat panel plates. This plasma will eventually burn out. It is 100% inevitable. It is know in the FPD design world that plasma TV technology will die out within 5-10 years.

A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a thin, flat display device made up of any number of color or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a light source or reflector. It is prized by engineers because it uses very small amounts of electric power, and is therefore suitable for use in battery-powered electronic devices.
Each pixel consists of a column of liquid crystal molecules suspended between two transparent electrodes, and two polarizing filters, the axes of polarity of which are perpendicular to each other. Without the liquid crystals between them, light passing through one would be blocked by the other. The liquid crystal twists the polarization of light entering one filter to allow it to pass through the other.
As LCD technology gets better through schemes such as DLP, the quality of LCD’s will eventually become equal to that of plasma TV’s. For gaming, Plasma TV’s respond faster and provide better definition, however, as stated previously, have their definite problems.

I would wait 5 years until some advances which are currently on the design table come to fruition. By that time, GEN 10 flat panels will become a reality and the current GEN 8 models will become much cheaper.

LG makes a great DLP LCD

Another poster, Myles, is a salesman. Salesman are clueless - that is why they are salesmen and not engineers. A plasma TV will not last 15-20 years. You can bet your bottom dollar on that fact.

Comment on Why is there a 2" red stripe on the right hand side of my 42" plasma screen Vizio HDTV? by David R

1) Because it is a Vizio.

2) It sounds like your processor bit the dust.

They aren't exactly revered for their customer service, unless you have a service plan, you have to contact Vizio for some servicing. It's tough to find certified repairmen for TV's such as Vizio. It's a good idea to call, or shoot them an email to find out who is certified to service Vizio products in your area. If there is no one, you're going to have to ship out your TV to Vizio for repair. It's a pain in the neck and could get expensive. If the problem is a manufacturer defect, they will reimburse you for shipping cost.

Or, just throw it out, and buy a good plasma.

Loose ribbon cable perhaps, but it has been my experience your failure is actually the digital Video Processor board.....

But the WORST thing is that VIZIO parts are very very VERY, hard to get.!
